To lose weight, you need to have a calorific deficit. This means that you need to burn more energy than you provide in the form of food.
Many nutritionists recommend that you lose no more than one pound per week. To do this, you need to have a calorific deficit of 500 calories per day.
For example, if you are a man then you burn roughly 2,500 calories per day. To achieve one pound weight loss per week, you need to limit your intake to 2,000 calories per day.
